We help Christians apply Biblical truth to the everyday.
What + Why
Looking Upward is a writing ministry that creates resources on the application of Biblical truth to everyday life. Our free articles and monthly newsletters explore how we can live looking upward – focused on eternal truths in the now.
Spiritual growth depends upon an ever-increasing knowledge of God. This will happen only through studying the Bible and aligning our lives with what it proclaims.
However, for many people, even those within the church, there’s a disconnection between knowledge and application. Many assent to the reality of God’s love or the resurrection, for example, without experiencing the way that either transforms the way we treat other people and handle our emotions.
We seek to help people learn and apply the Bible to their lives through articles that are scripturally-based, personal, and thoughtful. We use stories from our own lives to show how God is growing us spiritually as we apply eternal truths in the now.
In December 2017, Olivia Davis, Looking Upward’s founder, visited the Sistine Chapel. While it was beautiful, she found herself craning her neck upward at the frescoed ceiling, hoping for a spiritual experience. When she returned home without one, she wanted to understand her disappointment.
Over time, it became clear. She was right to look upward – but she hadn’t looked high enough, expecting Michangelo’s paintings to inspire an experience when it was really the God to whom they pointed who should have been the object of her attention. Her eyes had been focused on the wrong thing. She wrote her first piece to remember this.
After finishing that piece, the question How can people learn to apply Biblical truth to their lives? wouldn’t leave her alone, so Olivia, convicted that the answer to this question was the universal key to spiritual growth, kept writing.
